Limbal transplantation

ABSTRACT

This manuscript reviews the surgical management of ocular surface disease using limbal grafting. Inittialy, some considerations about the main causes of ocular surface disorders are discussed. After, reports showing the role of corneal stem cells and its location at the limbus and the different surgical techniques are described.

RESUMO

Este artigo faz uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tratamento cirúrgico das doenças da superfície ocular, utilizando-se transplante de limbo córneo-conjuntival. Tece inicialmente algumas considerações sobre as principais causas de alteração da superfície ocular e em seguida, descreve trabalhos que evidenciam o papel das "stem cells" (células germinativas) do epitélio corneano e a sua localização no limbo. Finalmente, descreve as diferentes técnicas cirúrgicas que empregam o limbo córneo-conjuntival e os resultados obtidos.
